Not too long ago, I watched a television show where viewers praised the lead female character. There were interviews and articles where people called the show, new and fresh, and something everyone should watch.
The comments online went even farther, touting the character’s strength, sexuality, and boldness, as great. People discussed how they loved the character and how they were proud that she was empowering women to live a life that was free and without judgement.
However, as I continued reading through the many comments, I came across a few that were not in favor of the character. The commenters, actually disliked her and disagreed, saying that she was not a good role model and was not empowering for women. One person even stated their shame of the character’s behavior, and they refused to support the television show.
As I scrolled down the page, I noticed that behind each comment that was against the character, there were responses. A few of them expressed their dissatisfaction for those who objected to the character. They wrote comments saying how those who disagreed were uninformed, old-fashioned, bible-thumpers, legalistic, and overly conservative Christians. They also stated that,“times have changed” and people needed to “get with the times.”
When I was finished reading, I sat silently thinking the people who lashed out at those who disagreed with the character. Then a word appeared in my mind. “Conform!” To conform means to agree between an individual’s behavior and a groups’s standards and expectation.
Suddenly, I began to think about the current state of the world and how we have become a place, where people want others to conform to the majority’s beliefs and ideologies. And sadly, when they don’t bend or change, they are attacked with malicious words or either threatened with bodily harm. This bothers me greatly.
The bible tells us not to conform.
“Do not be conformed to this world.” (Rom. 12:2)
And we should stand on this Word and say NO.
“No, I will NOT accept your beliefs.”
“No, I will NOT change my mind.”
“No, I will NOT stand for your cause.”
“No, I will NOT do as you want.”
I will be me and I will not conform to you or the majority.
