Last week I posted an article, titled The Lie of the Comfort Zone. In the post I shared that the comfort zone is not a safe haven, as we once believed. Actually it is a false sense of security that keeps people stagnant and content in life. It stops us from growing and living for a purpose.
So today, I wanted to share three ways that WE can kill the lie of the comfort zone in OUR life.
1-Make a decision – Everything in our world started with a decision. From our forefathers deciding that they no longer wanted to be under a King that treated them unfairly, which caused the American revolution. To the brave men and women of the 1960’s who decided to fight for their civil rights, which led to the passage of the Civil Rights Bill of 1964. And to Cesar Chavez who made the decision to stand up for the rights of migrant workers, creating a successful union that demanded and received the change they deserved.
All of those people refused to stay in their comfort zone. Instead they made a decision that changed their life and the lives of generations to come.
2-Make a plan with goals – Recently I read a book called Live Forward by Michael Hyatt. The premise of the book is to guide a person in making a plan for their life. While reading the book, I better understood how plans are important because they help us come out of our comfort zone. They allow us to prioritize those things that matter and those things that do not matter. Having a plan, gives us the support we need to live an intentional life with purpose and for our future.
So after you make your decision, it is important that you map out a written plan of action and follow it.
3-Make it to the finish line – Lastly, we must carry out our plan, until we reach the finish line. Motivational speaker Brian Tracy says, “If you have a clear goal and a plan to achieve it, your focus is fixed on a set course of action. Instead of becoming sidetracked by distractions and diversions, your time is focused on a straight line from start to finish.”
And yes, as we are working at our plan, there will be a number of setbacks, struggles, doubts, and fears that will consume us. However, we must be determined to keep our goals in the forefront of our mind and refuse to go back to our comfort zone.
So, I hope that you will make a conscious decision not to stay stuck in the lie of the comfort zone. Make a decision, make a plan, and make your way to the finish line, down the path of a purposeful life.
